Alexander & Sons

Plumbing has been a professional tradition in the Alexander family, passed from father to son over generations. When Jennifer Alexander married into the family, she went into the plumbing business herself. Jennifer and her husband opened Alexander & Sons Plumbing together in 2010. She had an important goal in mind: to show her daughters that a woman can run a business in a male-dominated industry.

“I just didn’t want them to feel like they couldn’t do something,” Jennifer said. 

Alexander & Sons has always been a family business, owned and operated by the Alexanders. The Alexanders are proud of their hands-on work, as they do all of the plumbing themselves. Alexander & Sons is focused on providing affordable, top-quality plumbing to the Fredericksburg community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Alexanders personally reached out to many local businesses to help them in a time of need. The Alexanders have always wanted to give back to the community, both with charitable volunteer work and with the business itself. 

Jennifer detailed the steps she had to overcome as a woman, particularly that clients would automatically assume that she was not capable of plumbing. Clients would condescend to her, and act as if she did not understand her own business. However, Jennifer embraced these obstacles, and did not let them deter her from giving exemplary plumbing and customer service. 

“You always have to have a smile on your face, no matter what you’re going through,” Jennifer said. 

According to Jennifer, family is the backbone of Alexander & Sons, from her husband to her children. That is why, for Jennifer, it is so essential to demonstrate to her daughters that a woman can go into any profession she wishes to. And some day, just as Jennifer has done, a woman can defy all obstacles and own a successful business. 

“I wanted to show them that you can do it,” Jennifer said. “Don’t give up.”
