Sugar + Spruce
Crystal and Morgan Wellman are the mom and daughter team of Sugar + Spruce.
Let's get to know Crystal and Morgan.
When do you start planning your holiday window, store displays or social media posts:
We are so blessed to have a wonderful window designer, Steven Lippert Designs, who has handled all of our windows and in store displays since we opened in 2012. As far as our social media posts, we typically just post as ideas come to us. Our store manager, Julissa, is a social media queen and helps us keep up with the all the latest trends.
What new gift or special offer are you most excited to offer your customers:
This year we are offering a “build a box” station where you can choose one of our gorgeous gift boxes and any items you would like to package up a custom gift box that is as unique as the people on your list.
Strangest question asked about a holiday retail item or special offer:
I would say the weirdest question we always get is “can I eat this?” While we do have some delicious looking products, please do not eat them. Whenever anybody asks I always say “you will only take one bite!”
Will you offer a holiday event or treat to your customers:
We are looking to treat customers to a hot cocoa bar before Christmas. Keep an eye out on our social media for the official date.
Share your holiday shopping fail:
I would say that any shopping fails usually come down to me not ordering something in time! At that point I just print a picture of the gift and let them know it’s on the way. Whoops!
Great debates: Clear or colored light displays and gift bags or wrap gifts:
I prefer clear lights for a more classic look and I’m definitely a gift bag gal. I learned a long time ago that my cats love to mess with wrapping paper so I just save myself the trouble.
Have you ever hidden a gift and not been able to find it? If so, what was it and to whom was it to be given:
I unfortunately have an “out of sight, out of mind” brain so I have to keep detailed notes in my phone of every hiding place to keep this from happening. So far, so good!
Have you ever switched a name tag on a holiday gift and why:
I’ve never switched a name tag last minute on a holiday gift, but I have definitely bought items with one person in mind and given it to someone else. Usually it ends up being that I found a gift that fit the original person better.
Weirdest holiday gift received and your reaction:
I can’t really think of a weird gift. My people all know me well so they’re always pretty spot on with my gifts.
Best holiday gift given and their reaction:
It’s a little silly but I’ve always gotten my dad sassy mugs based on jokes between us or just things going on in his life and he absolutely loves them! That man probably has a million mugs at this point but we have so much fun with it I don’t think I’ll ever stop.
Unique or bizarre holiday tradition:
Every year since we were all kids we’ve done a “kid gift exchange”. At Thanksgiving all the kids draw names and we buy Christmas gifts for our person. Our family has grown a lot over the years with partners/spouses and babies so it’s a great way to give everyone gifts without blowing our budgets.
Last minute shopping or shopping months in advance:
I’m typically a last minute shopper overall, but will sometimes pull the trigger on unique gifts ahead of time. I am horrible about keeping gifts a secret when I’m excited about them, so last minute shopping helps to prevent me from spoiling any gifts!
