Let's get to know Latoya.
What’s your story?
Just a few years ago, I could barely get the courage to order coffee alone. It all started when I realized I was missing out on so much of what life had to offer. I started to find comfort in the idea of exploring the world around me, even if it meant stepping out of my comfort zone. I took small steps. I began by visiting local cafes in FXBG, ordering my favorite latte and taking a seat by the window with my journal. I started documenting my thoughts, which gradually evolved into sharing snippets of my life on social media. Each post was a small victory, a way to connect with others who might have felt the same insecurities I once did. As my confidence grew, so did my curiosity. I began exploring local restaurants, historical sites and local events, all while snapping photos and sharing my experiences online. Now I'm traveling solo and highlighting local FXBG as a social media influencer, sharing my adventures and connecting with a vibrant community. Today, as I explore and highlight FXBG, I cherish the connections I've made and the stories I've been able to share. From cozy coffee shops to lively local events, I aim to showcase the hidden gems of my hometown while inspiring others to step out of their comfort zones too. I can hardly believe how far I've come. What once felt like an obstacle has transformed into a passion and purpose. I’m not just an influencer; I’m a storyteller, a traveler, and a proud member of a community that embraces growth, adventure, and connection. My journey continues, and I can’t wait to see where it leads me next.
What inspired you to start your account?
The inspiration for starting my account came from stepping out of my comfort zone and wanting to share the unique experiences that our area offers. Growing up here, I noticed how many hidden gems, local businesses, and events often went unnoticed. I wanted to highlight the vibrant culture, history, and creativity of FXBG while also sharing my own travel stories and personal experiences.
How has your unique identity contributed to your account?
As a Black local female influencer, my unique identity has profoundly shaped the perspective I bring to my account. My experiences and cultural background have allowed me to highlight businesses that often go unnoticed in the broader narrative of our community. I believe representation matters, and having a sense of belonging and empowerment through my posts is essential.
How do you ensure that your page maintains a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone?
I implement several strategies to ensure that everyone feels valued by highlighting local businesses and events from various backgrounds. I actively monitor comments and messages to ensure a positive environment. I also regularly celebrate cultural events, heritage months, and initiatives that promote inclusivity.
Why did you decide to do local reviews/Fredericksburg-centered content?
Growing up in the Fredericksburg area, I have a deep love for my hometown. I wanted to help others discover the unique businesses, events, and experiences that make FXBG special. I was one of those people that felt like you had to go to the next major city to find a fun activity to do or a great restaurant but once I got out and started to explore I realized that everything I needed was already here.
What is your favorite part of being in Fredericksburg and this community?
My favorite part of being in Fredericksburg and being part of this community is the sense of connection and belonging that spreads through the area. Fredericksburg has a lot of history, and I love how that history is woven into the fabric of our community. From historic landmarks to local traditions, there's always something to learn and appreciate about our past.
How do you keep going when times get tough?
When times get tough, I often turn to inspirational content like books, podcasts, or local stories. Hearing about others overcoming difficulties can provide motivation and remind me that challenges are just a part of life but you will get through it. Also reminding myself of the purpose behind my work helps me stay motivated. Whether it's supporting local businesses, engaging with the community, or sharing valuable information, focusing on the impact I can have keeps me driven during challenging times.
If you could share one message with the community, what would it be?
Do not underestimate the quality of this community. No matter your background or your interest Fredericksburg has so much to explore.
