In the spirit of Halloween, there is no business better to highlight than FAVOR, a chocolate shop on Caroline Street. FAVOR is owned and operated by Jenny Heflin, who purchased the business in November of 2019. Like many businesses in downtown Fredericksburg, FAVOR was drastically impacted by COVID-19. But Heflin kept her focus on keeping FAVOR afloat, and has done so beautifully.
According to Heflin, there are many factors as to what makes a great chocolate. Neuhaus, FAVOR’s premier chocolatier, is the oldest chocolatier in the world. Based out of Belgium, Heflin has her Neuhaus chocolates and ingredients imported, and finds them to make her products that much more delicious. Heflin is a firm proponent of organic ingredients, and is thrilled that Neuhaus has improved the organic nature and quality of their product. She is also importing ingredients from a French chocolatier, all the chocolates from which are free from genetically-modified ingredients.
“It speaks a lot to the integrity of the companies,” Heflin said. “It’s not always easy to achieve.”
As a woman-owned business, Heflin has discovered that many businesses and business owners were prejudiced towards her as a single woman. However, she takes great pride in the business of FAVOR, and has not let such prejudices deter her. Heflin’s favorite part of working at FAVOR is the look on guests’ faces, once they discover how many chocolate options they offer. She said that many guests of FAVOR are thrilled that such a shop exists in Fredericksburg, and cannot wait to introduce even more guests to her establishment.
