A crowd almost matching Fredericksburg’s 22,000 population visited Wegmans grocery store on its June opening day in the city’s tourism campus, Celebrate Virginia South. Company officials were elated at the public response to the 140,000 square foot store. To entice Wegmans, City of Fredericksburg created a tax-based incentive package that could reach $1.7 million in value to the grocer. The Fredericksburg location is currently the furthest south from Wegmans Rochester, N.Y. home. In seeking the incentive, Wegmans projected $60 million in annual sales from the Fredericksburg store.
A perennial Top Ten employer in Fortune Magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For”, Wegmans is considered an innovator in the grocery sector. Their stores have a much broader draw than most grocers, which is expected to enhance the City’s total benefit from Wegmans.
