James Monroe High School offers the advantages of a relatively small school environment (900 students) with a strong academic program including honors, AP and college credit courses in cooperation with Germanna Community College. The new school facility opened in 2009, demonstrating the latest innovations in school design and functionality.
AP classes are available in the following areas: English, Art, Spanish, French, Latin, Calculus, Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Virginia/U.S. Government; Virginia/U.S. History. Students at JMHS can choose from a wide variety of elective classes and extracurricular activities. Students can become proficient in French, Latin, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese. Those in the arts include: band, computer arts, orchestra, photography, chorus, drawing/painting and drama. A full array of career and technical education courses are also available.
The JM Yellow Jackets boast a strong athletic program, including: football, basketball, soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, golf, softball, track, tennis and swimming. In addition, students can participate in student council, the newspaper and the yearbook.
A variety of vocational programs are offered, including: cosmetology, construction building trades, health careers and technology.
