Tourist-oriented directional signs provide travelers with directional guidance to an approved business/site location available along City primary or secondary roadways (not interstates).
Businesses pay an application fee, fabrication/installation fee for each sign. The business is responsible for all costs associated with the sign(s). Tourist Oriented Directional Sign Program Application
What is a Tourist Oriented business? Tourist oriented business is defined as any approved cultural, recreational, retail or tourism services site which meet the participation criteria as outlined in the Business Participation Requirements and Tourist Oriented Directional Business Criteria section. Where are the structures placed? These signs are placed along city primary or secondary roadways (not interstates) within public right of way. Can Gas, Food, and Lodging establishments participate in the program? No
What distance criteria must a business meet? A tourist oriented business/site location is eligible for signing at intersections within one (1) mile of a non-controlled access city primary system highway. City staff will review and determine proper distance if less then one (1) mile. Such signs may be installed on the approach of intersections or further in advance as sight distance requires. Intersection signs must be 200’ minimum in advance of intersection and minimum 200’ spacing between such signs. Advance sign spacing is increased to 500’. Also, Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) states that regulatory, warning, and guide signs take priority over tourist oriented signs if spacing or visibility is a conflict. Also, Right of Way (ROW) may be an issue due to the size of the signs and the required clear zone (lateral) offsets.
What size are the signs? A panel is 72” wide by 18” high. How much will it cost to participate in the program?
$175.00 application fee - one time per sign and $625.00-$1,225.00 fee per sign, fabrication and installation per business sign per direction.
Can seasonal businesses participate in the program? No. Once I am in the program, can my sign(s) be removed? Yes. Certain conditions can result in the removal of your sign(s): if your location no longer offers the required services and/or does not meet the criteria. The City reserves the right to remove the sign(s) at any time, for any reason (e. g. road construction, utility work, etc.) The business will receive appropriate notice prior to removal of the sign(s). How will the signs be maintained? All maintenance of the structures and signs will be performed by City approved subcontractors; any fees associated with maintenance will be billed to the business. Notice will be sent prior to maintenance. For more information, please email Amy Peregoy, Economic Development Specialist or call the Department of Economic Development and Tourism at 540.372.1216.
